Pokaiņi Forest, shrouded in legend
For a long time, innkeepers have been telling legends about barley wine that has gained strength in a cognac barrel. The pine buds combine with oak to create a rich aroma, while a malty high-alcohol backbone is complemented by delicate cognac notes. A beer that demands to be enjoyed!
Today, the story is a reality and available in both pubs and beer bars.
“Barley wine” is a phrase that does not thrill the fair visitor, at least not yet. But this style of beer deserves not only to be recognised, but also to be enjoyed – regularly and consciously.
This type of beer has been with mankind since ancient Greece. Strong and dense ales, often supplemented with inspirational herbs and berries. The impressive 9%+ alcohol level was created with a lot of malt and a long fermentation. The highly sugared wort will age for months to years, awaiting the great occasions when it is brought to the table.
The serious amount of alcohol allows for a broad and distinctive flavour that transforms beer drinking into a sensual experience. Once the bottle is opened, a cigar and a proud-looking leather armchair will be brought out for a leisurely evening. Enjoyed with desserts, conversations on noble subjects or deep thoughts.
The pub offers both bottlings of Cognac’s cask Pokaiņu mežs and the classic Pokaiņu mežs on draught.
* In the summer, we recommend storing a few bottles in a dark and cool place. For every proud drink, forgetting it allows the flavours to grow and develop, softening the firmness and bringing out the taste.
