It is also a time when there is an active exchange of ideas with both northerners and southerners. The cult of Dionysus, which was originally more associated with mead and beer, originated with the Thracians, who inhabited the areas north of classical Greece. But from the Phoenicians the Greeks learn to grow grapes and make wine.

There is no historical evidence of vineyards before the Phoenicians, as the berries for this drink are gathered outdoors. History is also silent on whether being at this intersection of intoxicating ideas was one of the reasons for the classical age in ancient Greece, but around the 6th century the Greeks began to think hard. It is possible to name and list the influential Greek thinkers responsible for the division of the entire tangible world, including man, into the four elements of fire, air, earth and water. Since there was limited way of testing this claim in those distant times, this division spread quite quickly to medicine: everyone’s health depended on the balance of these basic elements maintained in the body.

Unfortunately, with the exception of water, none of the elements could really be absorbed in pure form by the average person, so it was necessary to divide all daily products into four categories.

In addition to medicine and nutrients, this division extends to personality traits, characteristics and even genders, as well as the diets recommended for them. Cereals needed for brewing become a moist-cool nutrient (Earth and Water), and grapes a hot-dry one (Fire and Air). Character traits are also broken down – masculinity becomes dry-hot and femininity becomes moist-cool. Bread also becomes a man’s food because it has lost its feminine nature in the cooking process, while beer was not hot and dry enough in those days to eradicate the undesirable qualities of a real man from the cereal. From now on, bread and wine become the basis for a meal worthy of a man.

It does not take long for these scientific advances to leave their mark on religion – Dionysus becomes a strong patron saint of wine. In a sense, the turning point in this story is a Greek playwright called Aeschylus. His greatest innovation in classical drama is considered to be the addition of a second narrator in his plays (before that, a single narrator – the protagonist – and a chorus took to the Greek stage).

Although modern theatre has long since ceased to suffer from the shackles of two actors, the everyday life of humanity is still somewhat affected by a personal encounter between Aeschylus and Dionysus. As part of this meeting, Dionysius allegedly commissioned Aeschylus to write four plays which, in a witty and frightening spirit, mock Dionysius’ opponents, the Thracian rulers Lycurgus and Pentheus. Both agree to repudiate Dionysus’ entourage and its intoxication rituals, and both receive Dionysus’ punishment: one goes mad and kills his son, while the other, dressed in women’s clothes, is killed by a mob of women intoxicated by Dionysus.

It is interesting that in these plays Dionysus has already become the guardian of wine, while Lycurgus and Pentheus are lovers of other beverages or, more likely, abstainers. In any case, both of these examples make the Greeks think twice and to escape the wrath of Dionysus they decide that Dionysus is the god of wine, theatre and revelry and that it is better not to annoy him by drinking beer or mead. Aeschylus’ example is followed by other playwrights, who praise Dionysus as the patron saint of wine at the annual Athenian theatre festival. Since the Greeks were very proud of their theatre, this becomes the basis for another division: theatre is for civilised people and the rest are barbarians.

Greek civilisation, with the help of Alexander’s Macedonian phalanx, carried this vision briefly throughout the known world, but without lasting success. In Egypt and the Two Peaks, fermented beverages of all kinds continue to be drunk. This black work is done by the Romans, the most zealous carriers of Greek civilisation in the world. Although Latin was the language of power in the Roman Empire, Greek was a popular second language among the ruling elite. First the Romans sold wine to the barbarians, i.e. to any people living outside Rome’s borders, and then offered to teach them to grow their own wine in exchange for becoming part of the Roman Empire. If the barbarians refused, the Romans gave the barbarian leaders enough wine to get them all drunk, but then they got their way.

This tactic served Europe quite well until the Romans reached the limit of the natural range of grapes suitable for wine, which then became the actual boundary of the Roman Empire. In the interests of historical fairness, it should be mentioned that in many provinces the common people continued to drink beer, but both the local nobles and, of course, the Roman governors, preferred to drink only grape wine. The stereotype of the rich and powerful choosing wine and the working classes choosing beer was thus reinforced in Roman Europe. This superstitious division between beer and wine has survived to the present day thanks to another Roman invention, Christianity, but that is the next chapter in the history of beer.

The curse of Greek beer HOW THE WITTY AISHIL PUSHED THE BEER FROM THE OLYMPUS.
